The original Pasadena-made AutoMag pistol of Harry Sanford, chambered in the prestigious .44 caliber AMP, hailed from the 1960s. Milled from Carpenter 455 stainless steel stock, less than 3,000 were made.
Since then, the AutoMag was made by TDE Corp in North Hollywood (ser. no. range A3400 – A05015) El Monte, California (ser. no. range A05016-A08300), then in even smaller numbers by Lee Jurras Customs and Galena Industries in South Dakota, ending production in 2000.
According to the fine people over at The Blue Book, “Less than 9,000 Auto Mags were produced by all manufacturers.”
That’s why it was so cool when, in 2015, the new Auto Mag Ltd. Corp. in South Carolina was stood up to put the gun back into production. From the Classic, which was made in small batches after 2017 to the limited production Founder’s Edition, few of these have been born.
