The biathlon sport combines two challenging disciplines in a manner like no other sport. Athletes must meet the physical demands of cross-country skiing and combine it with the skill of precision rifle marksmanship. Competitors cross-country ski while carrying their smallbore .22 LR rifle, which must meet a minimum weight requirement of 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs). While shooting, competitors fire 5 rounds from either a prone or standing position and engage five targets at 50 meters (55 yards).
