Mietenkorte’s victory did not come easy. On the third day of the match during the standard rifle match, Mietenkorte accidentally shot his last set of targets on the wrong relay, causing him to take a zero score and to lose out on the standard rifle title. Mietenkorte worked to mentally overcome the error and tough wind conditions to win the Hunter Rifle National Championship for the second year in a row with a score of 98 -120X.
The 2023 US High Power Rifle Silhouette National Championships were held at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico on July 21st through the 23rd.
“The support and encouragement I received after making that morning match error reaffirmed that the silhouette shooting community is made up of some of the best shooters, competitors, and people around! This sport and the people who are on that firing line mean more to me than any number on that scoreboard ever will. I hope this doesn’t happen to anyone in the future but if it does, I’ll be there to repay their kindness,” commented Erich.
