The free community event was a cooperative effort between the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA) and national partner Provost Umphrey Law Firm. It was designed to provide hands-on, outdoor experiences for kids aged 9 to 15 and followed on the heels of the USA’s Fourth Annual Provost Umphrey Texas State Sporting Clays Shoot the day prior.

Coaches and shooters from the Jefferson County 4-H Sporting Clays Club, union volunteers from Roofers International, and members of Provost Umphrey Law Firm instructed youth on fishing and shooting. Children learned casting and fishing techniques while catching a wide assortment of fish that had been specially stocked for the event at the One in One Hundred Gun Club.

Joe Fisher, managing partner of Provost Umphrey Law Firm, explained the impact of this event.

“For some of these kids, holding a gun or casting a line into the water is a completely new experience, making it meaningful for us to offer this opportunity,” he said. “But it’s not just about the kids; it’s also about the parents. Nowadays, getting children to spend time outdoors can be challenging. Get Youth Outdoors Day provides a memorable outdoor experience for kids and offers parents a chance to see their children engage with nature in a way they’ll always remember.”

Giveaways sponsored by Provost Umphrey included three guided hunting trips, two fishing trips, and a lifetime Texas hunting license.

“This event is a perfect example of what great partners and dedicated union members can achieve,” USA Conservation Coordinator Cody Campbell said. “They have made for a successful event, and more importantly impacted kids’ lives by introducing them to the outdoors.”

The Provost Umphrey Get Youth Outdoors Day was part of a series of free, community-based youth outreach activities organized under Work Boots on the Ground—the USA’s flagship conservation program. Saturday’s event was also supported by national partners Union Plus and Humana, as well as USA founding partners UIG, ULLICO, Bank of Labor, AFL-CIO Investment Trust Corporation, and Buck Knives.

This event carries special meaning to many people, including UIG Commercial Insurance Broker Nick Giovenco.

“I’ve been a fisherman for over 25 years and was taught everything I know by my fishing buddy, my grandfather,” Giovenco said. “It’s a great honor and privilege of mine to pass on the lessons my grandfather taught me to the next generation. I couldn’t be more grateful to UIG for providing us with opportunities to give back like this. I know it means a lot to our organization as it fits perfectly into one of our main mission statements: ‘Do the right thing.’”
