| September 27, 2021 (WASHINGTON, D.C.) –The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) is excited to celebrate our nation’s 49th annual National Hunting and Fishing Day. CSF led the effort by working with both the President and the Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus to recognize National Hunting and Fishing Day. On this day and throughout the year, we encourage all sportsmen and women to get outside and share their love for our outdoor traditions with the next generation of hunters, anglers, trappers, and shooting sports participants.
Formally signed as an official Presidential Proclamation by President Richard Nixon in 1972, National Hunting and Fishing Day is celebrated on the fourth Saturday in September each year, creating a great opportunity to celebrate the historical and ongoing contributions of the original conservationists – hunters and anglers. Through the purchase of licenses, tags, and stamps, and by paying self-imposed excise taxes on firearms, ammunition, archery equipment, fishing tackle, motorboat fuel, and other equipment, hunters and anglers drive conservation funding in the United States, through the American System of Conservation Funding (ASCF), a unique “user pays – public benefits” program. “Our nation’s hunters and anglers are integral to the conservation of our nation’s fish, wildlife, and natural resources,” said Jeff Crane, CSF’s President, and CEO. “It is through their support as the original conservationists we were able to collect 43 gubernatorial proclamations in addition to a presidential proclamation”. In addition to sportsmen and women’s support of conservation funding, hunting, angling, trapping, and recreational shooting are culturally and economically important activities that have provided a much-needed reprieve for many Americans during the ongoing pandemic, leading to increased participation in several states. With the renewed conversations regarding the importance of outdoor recreational opportunities for an individual’s physical and mental health, there is perhaps no better time to introduce interested adults or kids to the outdoors for the first time.
