Unveiling to Two Cabot OAK Pistols: Leviathan & Aphrodite

Cabot, Pennsylvania– September 2022– I am pleased and excited to announce the completion of our two latest one-of-a-kind Masterpieces, Aphrodite and Leviathan. As you know, OAK offering constitutes our rarest – and most difficult work – and is also our greatest pride and joy in our quest to push the boundaries of the science and art of the iconic 1911 design.

Over the years, we have delved deep into cutting, machining, and the art of finishing Damascus steels. Similar to grading a gem, not all Damascus steels are alike, and from time to time, we are able to source unique “gems” of Damascus steel which we transform into a pistol.

Such is the case with Aphrodite and Leviathan.

Eighteen months ago, we received a package containing unique materials for two guns from 87-year-old Master Blacksmith Robert Eggerling, who IMHO is the greatest artist in the medium of steel.  Receiving material from Eggerling is like a Christmas present 18 months before you can open it because we don’t really know what the potential of the material will be or how exactly it will reveal its beauty during the finishing process.  What was evident was that one of the patterns contained unusual wispy hairlike structures within the hand-forged steel that suggested a possibility for refinement, elegance, and beauty.  We instinctively called the raw material Aphrodite, after the Greek Goddess associated with beauty, pleasure, passion, and lust.  Our instincts were correct!

And without further delay, I present Aphrodite

In contrast, the other billet of Damascus contained a pattern that evoked a feeling of menace as the raw material Eggerling designed and forged had what appeared to be a scaly serpentine pattern.  This is interesting, we thought at the time.  We tend to name a project at the beginning for internal purposes, and often that will change as we learn how the material will expose itself as it is worked by our artisans.  In any event, the early name for the pistol project was Leviathan.

Fast forward to today, and without a doubt, the result exceeded our high expectations for its potential.  We don’t know exactly why unique billets of Damascus steel will finish in ways that tend to have their own will, but they do.  Leviathan is particularly unique in this regard.  We were quite floored as the slide grips and trigger revealed emotional stirring cerulean swirls and eddies and shifting color tones along the slide. It is chaos and beauty all at the same time.

I am pleased to share with you: Leviathan

Each of these pistols includes world-class cases, each designed to compliment these two Master works of art.  Within each of the product pages, please look for the videos which provide more perspective on the exquisite finishes of each pistol I have no doubt Aphrodite and Leviathan will represent our efforts of American craftsmanship for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Rob Bianchin
