Antalya, Turkey– June 2024– All eyes will remain on the Turkish city of Antalya in the coming days as the USA’s men seek a path to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with the final two team quota slots to be given based on world ranking.
Heading into Saturday’s team rounds of the Final Quota Tournament (FQT) as sixth seeds, Trenton Cowles, Brady Ellison and Jack Williams defeated Indonesia 6-0 in their 1/8 round match, opening with two strong sets of 58 out of a possible 60.
Stepping onto the big stage for individual, televised quarterfinals, the USA and Germany both opened with 58s and split the first set. A 57-56 win in the second set gave USA the lead and building confidence. The two drew level in the third set, coming down to final arrows to determine the nation to advance. Germany opened with a 29, which the USA matched, but as the clock ticked down, the USA came up just short in the final three arrows as Germany took the win with an unbeatable 59.
As Chinese Taipei took the semifinal win over Germany in the next match, they solidified their spots for Paris, taking one team ahead of the USA in current team world rankings out of the running for those final two team allocation spots that will be awarded after the update on June 24.
This means the USA shifts its gaze to the upcoming Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 3, which begins on Tuesday. Three team quota slots were available from the FQT. The others went to Mexico and Great Britain.
India went out at the quarterfinal round in Turkey so will look to rely on their ranking, which means China (5th) realistically stands between the USA (8th) and that coveted team place in Paris.
