Custer’s Last Stand: Rare Little Bighorn Colt Comes up for Auction

Rock Island, Illinois– May 2022– The Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Battle of the Greasy Grass, Custer’s Last Stand, the Custer Massacre – all are many names describing the same pivotal moment in American history. When five companies of Lt. Col. George Custer’s men were killed by Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne warriors, it shocked the nation.

Most of the “Lot 5” Colts are accounted for, or were modified. However, this particular model has apparently been off the books since 1876…which could mean…

Artifacts from that historic battle are supremely desirable by museums and collectors alike, with few available to satisfy the demand.

Rock Island Auction Company is honored to bring to the collecting public a Colt Single Action Army documented as retrieved from that hallowed battlefield and then tucked away for over 140 years.

SN 4552 comes from Colt’s 5th Lot of Single Action Army models shipped to the military in January 1874, and was then shipped from Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois where they sat until June to be shipped to the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment.

You know, Custer’s outfit.
